Requirements for the test are that you be a male Smith of direct Smith
lines, as the test is a Y chromosome, male test. If you are not a male
Smith, but have a relative that is a male Smith (ie, last name is
Smith/Smyth/Smythe/Schmidt), consider asking that person to take the test as
your representative. I might mention here that a number of female Smiths
have expressed interest in taking the test, same thing goes to find a male
kin representative.

join the project. If you take the DNA test as part of the project, you get a
discount on the kit-I think you would want to do that, anyway, as the
advantage of being involved in the project is that you have other's results
to compare against.
