letter, Enanuel Fashbaugh, Milford, Indiana to his sister and
brother-in-law, Frederick and Lovina Fashbaugh Hartline, my great
grandparents, Franklin Twp, Tuscarawas, Ohio

Frederick Hartline

Tuscarawas County, Ohio November 8, 1878

"I received your Kind letter yesterday and was glad to hear from you but
sorry that you had Sickness in your family.

"Mother was sick last night with Chills and Fever but is some better
this morning. She has been having chills off and on for some time.
It seems hard to break in her.

"Pete Smith is still running his grocery. He fell through the hay mow
and Nearly broke his leg but is able to Limp around.

"I finished husking corn last week. I got about 800 bushels off that 20
acre field. Corn is worth 20 cts, hogs 2 cts, but I sold 2 yesterday to
the Butcher for 2 1/4 cts. They weighed 250 lbs a piece. I am
fattening more and have one sow and 9 pigs to winter.
The Hog Cholera has destroyed thousands of hogs through this Country.
It generally attacks the large herds so the rich can stand the blunt.

"I have got the Estate all Settled up. It run to $5,457.84. Mother got
Divides on all except her $500. Father had $4,653.77 and we sold goods
worth $279.35 and we added funeral expenses and Tombstone and settling
up Doctor bills. I can give you the Whole proceedings or if you wish it
or you csn get it from the Clerk's Office in Warsaw.

"We have built a small kitchen to the East end of the house and we do
our own cooking in there and have the house divided so the women are
better Sattisfied now than they ever were before.

"We had a snowstorm yesterday and last night. We could not get to see
you now with Mother so unwell. She wants to have a girl live with her
so we have to stay at home if she gets sick. She gets Crazy.

"Well, I hope that Pump letter did not cause any hard feelings for I
didn't mean that it should. I only wrote it to make you laugh.

"Elias has traded his shop for his old farm but I guess he has told you
before. Uncle John Mocks and young John's wife have had a hell of a
mess. Old John put her out of the house but it is too bad to tell and
too long a story to write, but it beats our fuss all flat and you must
guess the rest. Find enclosed 50 cts in scrip. Owe you 6 cts yet.
