I really can't agree more with the message about Family Tree Maker and
Broderbund. It is so very sad that they have "captured" the market. I think
that some of what they produce is good and needed. They may be general
resources but they are nevertheless very useful items to have on the shelf.
The nation wide index to the 1850 census is one example. I really prefered
the old style with each state separate. I found that much easier to use. But
that may be my own prejudice and it is certainly a useful source.

But I am on their mailing list and I keep looking in vain for "new" research
and "new" sources. I work in the FHC as a volunteer and time and time again
novices come in and ask me if I think they need to purchase some World Family
Tree disk which has an ancestor's name on it. I am always appalled that these
poor beginners are ripped off by this company. Then they come to me and
mutter about how expensive genealogy is. They would be far better off
spending their money on other things.

I can't agree more with what your message said. I just don't know what to do
about it.
