Dear Kosciusko Friends:
As part of my genealogy pursuits, I am compiling a family cookbook. I
recently received some wonderful contributions from my mother and my
aunt (Annabel Baker & Ruth Baker of Mentone). They discussed food
"memories," and bemoaned the fact that they hadn't paid more attention
to the preparation of many of their childhood treats.
Would any of you have access to recipes that were popular locally in the
1920s and 1930s? I am sure that many were not written down, but perhaps
some churches or clubs put together cookbooks, or someone has an old
family recipe treasure chest and would be willing to share. Some
recipes which Mother and Aunt Ruth particularly enjoyed were:
chunk pickles and stuffed mangoes; red devils food cake with cooked
brown sugar icing; homemade egg noodles.
Who knows? Someone may have access to one of my grandmother's recipes!
She was Rose Baker, daughter of William T. Baker and Emeline Heighway.
She married a Baker, too--Elmore C. Their family was active in the
First Baptist Church of Mentone.
Thanks for any tidbits you can send my way!
Pam Green
