Andrew BARAN
Undertaker, Banker and former Alderman, dies at the age of 70
Whiting - Andrew L. BARAN, pioneer Whiting funeral director, was dead here today at the
age of 70. He died after an illness of seven months.
BARAN, a resident of Whiting 37 years and in business here the same number of years, was
a city councilman during the administration of the late Mayor Beaumont Parks, in 1914-18.
His death today recalled the time when BARAN, stationed as a private in the 15th Infantry
of the United States Army, back in 1895, unknowingly played a game of pocket billiards with
President William McKinley. President McKinley after congratulating BARAN upon his
"excellent" game, introduced himself. BARAN loved to recall the incident.
World Fair Guard
Born in Czechoslovakia, BARAN came to this country when 15 years old. He worked in the
Pennsylvania mines, later coming to Chicago where he was a guard at the Columbian exposition.
He came to Whiting 37 years ago and became one of the city's first funeral directors.
BARAN was prominent in the civic, business, social, fraternal and church life of this city.
He was a vice president and director of the American Trust and Savings Bank of Whiting
when the institution first was organized several years ago. He also was a director of the
Slovak Home Corporation.
He held memberships in several lodges, including the First Catholic Slovak's Men's Union,
Branch No. 81; Catholic Order of Foresters, National Slovak Society No. 111, Greek
Catholic Union and the "Tatran" Lodge.
