Subject: [INMARTIN] RE: Old Martin Co. Courthouse
Date: Sun, 6 Oct 2002 11:07:04 -0500
The Martin Co. Historical Society has asked the commissioners of Martin Co. if they can use the
old courthouse for a museum. The following article
was printed in The Washington Herald, Washington, IN
Wednesday, Oct 2, 2002. This is a quote from our local
sheriff, and I use the word loosely.
Sheriff David Qualkenbush told the commissioners the old
courthouse is unsecurable and is rotting.
Qualkenbus said the building needs painting and animals
are eating away at the bricks. He told the commissioners to
not allow the old building to be placed on the historical registry because no one will want it or will come to see
it. Qualkenbush said the county tried to sell the old jail for
$1 when the new security center was constructed, but no one
wanted it.
Ask the people if they want blacktop on the road or if the
want to drive by and look at the old courthouse: said the
sheriff.
The Martin Co. Historical Society has expressed some
interest in using the building. John Ramsey presented a
formal request to the commissioners on the society's behalf.
County attorney Michael Lett is examining the request.
Please pass this along to everyone interested in Martin Co.
history, genealogy and saving the old courthouse.
Thank you,
Martin Co. Historical Society
