The Fire Department

Answers Two Calls

Shortly before noon today the fire department was called to the residence of Hugh H. Murphy at Rogers and Prospect streets to put out a blaze which started in the kitchen of the house when some clothes which were drying near the stove caught fire. Mrs. Murphy was away from home, having taken dinner to her husband who is employed in one of the stone mills, when the fire started. About $700 damage which is covered by insurance.

Yesterday evening an awning over the Penrod drug store in the Graham block caught fire. The blaze was extinguished by the department with chemicals without any damage to the building. It is presumed that some one in the room above dropped a lighted cigarette out of the window.
