WRAY, John P, deceased, Crawfordsville, was b. in Montgomery Co, Ohio Nov
27, 1822. His father died when he was 8 years old and he was indentured to
Samuel GILLILAND with whom he lived until he became of age. He was given a
small sum of money by his guardian, and then began his way in the world with
no other help. One of his first important acts was to get married; but his
wife, Miss Julia Ann BUSENBARK, survived their union only 6 months. He next
married Miss Mary L. BRITTON March 6, 1849. She was b. in this township
(Union) Feb 6, 1831. Her great grandfather FARNSWORTH was a native of
Scotland and emigrated to NJ. Her great grandfather Britton was a soldier in
the revolution. Her mother's parents removed from NJ to OHio in 1820 and
there her mother was marr.t o Thomas P. Britton. This couple came to Union
Twp in 1829 and settled near where North Union is. They died there. Mr. &
Mrs. Wray were the parents of 6 children: Laura P, b. May 6, 1851 marr. In
Nov. 1870 to George STEELE of Clinton Co; Anna J, b. Feb 8, 1854 marr. in
Dec 1874 to James FINLEY of Clinton Co; Martha Francis, b. Oct 27, 1855 d.
July 8, 1863; WIlliam J, b. Dec 13, 1857; Clara E, b. Dec 6, 1860; and John
M, b. Sept 28, 1863. Mrs. Wray belongs to the New Light Church and her
husband was a democrat. He d. Jan 1, 866. When he was marr. the second time
he had $500 but being industrious and a careful manager, he prospered, and
at his death left his heirs a good homestead of 180 acrs. He was respected
by all who knew him.

On Tuesday, Jan 1, 1867 of typhoid fever, Mr. John P. Wray, aged 45 years
and 27 days. Mr. Wray was one of our oldest citizens (? and 45?) and a man
universally respected and beloved. His sudden and unexpected demise has
caused a deep feeling of sorrow among his numerous friends and
acquaintances.

Waveland Independent July 8, 1932 -- Mrs. Lafayette Penn died at her home E.
of Browns Valley on Monday morning. Funeral services at the New Market
Christian Church on Wed. afternoon were in charge of Rev. J.C. Nelson. She
was the daughter of James and Samantha Wray and was born Jan 28, 1863. She
married Mr. Penn in 1884. He survives her with one son, Ford Penn and 3
daughters: Mrs. Florence Doyel of Hammond; Mrs. RUth Linn of Roachdale and
Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner of New Market.
