Rockville Tribune, October 3, 1934

"Alfred Thomas Carmichael, son of Hiram and Minerva Spurgeon Carmichael, was born in Parke County, Union Township, June 15, 1852, and departed this life September 27, 1934, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 12 days. The deceased was the fifth child of a large pioneer family, five sisters and four brothers having preceded him in death. One sister alone, Mrs. Sarah Martin of Greencastle, survives.

Mr. Carmichael was married to Alice Harlan June 11, 1876 and to this union nine children were born. The wife and five children have preceded this husband and father to the home beyond. Three daughters, Mrs. Floyd Bales, Mrs. Roscoe Sutherlin, Mrs. Bessie Barnett, one son, James Alva, together with the sister, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren live to mourn the loss of his love and devotion.

…'I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of life.'"
