"Silas Lafayette Barnes, third child of Thoma A. and Ellen Jessup Barnes, was born near Jessup, Ind., March 7, 1858, and died at his home southeast of Jessup, Oct. 1, 1919, aged 61 years, 6 months and 24 days. He spent his entire life in the neighborhood in which he was born in which he was born, excepting five years, which were spent in Colorado. He was married to Cora Beatty Oct.12, 1890 and five children came to bless their home, three girls and two boys, namely: Lola Mabel, Roscoe Roy, Mollie Pearl, Harold Edward and Margaret Eleanor; the three daughters residing at home and the two sons having preceded the father to the great beyond. 'Lafe', as he was familiarly known, was of a very jovial disposition, with a ready smile and a kind word or joke for every one he met, which won him many friends.
…He leaves to mourn his departure besides the devoted wife and children, two brothers, Oliver of Oakland, Cal., (who was unable to attend the funeral) and Edward of Jessup; two sisters, Sarah Smock of Rockville, and Mollie Shirley of Indianapolis, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon, October 2, after which the body was laid to rest in the Forks of the Creek cemetery."
