Bill,

The Wabash and Erie Canal took a diagonal path from lake Erie down the
Wabash River in the north part of the state and followed the Wabash
southwest till it became the state line between IN and IL. Part of the
route was dug by manual labor, for instance in Tippecanoe Co. There were
other canals in Indiana, and parts of them are visible today if you know
where to look.
