Death certificates are available through the Department of Vital Statistics for the appropriate state. The site for IN records is:
http://www.in.gov/isdh/bdcertifs/bdcert.html

However, generally you need to have "kinship" with the person named on the record to obtain a copy of their death certificate.

A library near the area of the drowning likely has copies (probably on microfilm) of the local newspapers. You, or possibly a kind library employee, should be able to find and copy articles related to the death. Good luck.
