"Our position is that, if the markers have toppled over, the plot owners
have no apparent interest in the cemetery," Father Hartnett said. "We feel
we not only have a right to take them out, but that we have a duty to do so
because they are unsightly, hazardous, and increase the cost of maintaining
the cemetery as a whole."
How arrogant! And as for the plot owners having no interest in the
cemetery, it seems to me that the plot owners were dead. Hello.
You know, after seeing this information and the story from Jack Briles about
the Catholic cemetery he is trying to restore, it does make me wonder how
many other Catholic/church cemeteries were treated in this manner in the
past 50+ years. I wish I had the time and the research skills to check this
out.
On a more personal note, this also disturbs me because I have a lot of
ancestors who settled in Missouri, some lived in St. Louis. To my knowledge
none of them were Catholic, but, again, I wonder how many other cemeteries,
Catholic or otherwise, may have been destroyed for the sake of "economy."
