Some of you may have worked as part of a cemetery association to get 501
status for your cemetery. I've got everything ready to go on this for the
Mt Olivet Cemetery in Parke Co except the requirement for a certified
appraiser to appraise the value of the land "at the time of purchase." IRS
is firm that this requirement must be met, even though we never purchased a
square foot of the ground. It was all gifted.
I was told by an IRS staffer that it would be adequate for a certified
appraiser to write a letter saying it was impossible to place a value on
the land at the time it was gifted in three parcels from 1849 to about 1905.
I've encountered a problem. Appraisers have very specific areas of
licensing, and residential appraisers can't do this. Only a certified
general appraiser can do it. There aren't many of these folks available in
Parke Co, if any. And one I found in Terre Haute wants to check to see if
it's within his licensing capability, as he never heard of it. Anyone
know a certified appraiser who would write a letter from the pertinent
facts we could supply, such as deeds and acreage?
