I haven't yet found Nickolas & Rosan ALT in the 1900 census. Perhaps they went to Switzerland for a visit and left the boys with various friends while they were gone. I did find their son William in Fayette Twp., Livingston Co., IL, page 293

ALT, William, b. May 1879, age 21, boarder in the home of Albert & Lena REIMANOF? Albert b. in Switzerland, Lena b. in Iowa. This listing says William was born in Illinois, father born in Switzerland, mother born in Iowa.
