OBITUARY March 1905
John S. Smith, one of the pioneer German settlers of the west side, died
at his home near Medaryville, Friday, March 17, aged 89 years 7 months and
18 days. Deceased was born in Germany and came to this country in 1854 and
settled in Ohio. A little alter he came to Pulaski County. His wife died
15 years ago. He leaves three children, John Smith of near Winamac, and
Philip and Isabelle, who live at home.
Taken from SMITH FAMILY submitted by Violet L. Smith to "People of
Pulaski County, IN" page 188, published in 1983....see correction paragraph
below this article.
John S. Smith (1815-1905) was one of the pioneer settlers of the
area east of Medaryville. He came from Mecklenburg, (???)
Germany....(actually, Baden, see below explination)......, to Ohio, then
in 1857 to Medaryville, Indiana. A cousin, Sadie Kopkey Malia,
told that the folks were tenant farmers in Germany, and if they did not
please the "masters," they could be beaten or made to leave the
country. John came to America by himself, then sent for his wife and
four small children of a former marriage. Farming and a fruit orchard
sustained the family. A Will written in 1888 names his children:
Justin, Joseph,, Barbara, and Josifa. Also named are the children of
his second wife, Anna Maria Mechler: John, Juliann, Phillip, and
Isabella. .........
...................
In a letter to me, dated May 2001, from Violet Smith, Violet states that she
got the above information from "Sadie" Kopkey Malia . Sadie showed Violet
her mother's bible. Sadies mother was a sister to Violet's grandmother
Smith. The bible said that they (Sadie's mother), was from Mecklenburg, so
Violet thought that John S. Smith was from Mecklenburg also.......
UNTIL....... she saw the 1970 census that said he was from Baden.

Pulaski County Indiana
White County originated in 1834 from Carroll County, which
originated in 1828 from Indian Lands; and Pulaski County originated in 1839
(there are some books which report this as 1835), from Cass and portions of
White County, Cass County, originated in 1828 from Indian Lands. Even though
Cass and White Counties accounted for lands which eventually would be
Pulaski County, they belonged to Native American's, primarily Pottawattamie
Tribe. President Jackson, and Jacksonian Democrats were vehemently working
Treaties to be signed with Native Americans, with the ultimate goal of
driving them to lands West of the Mississippi River. These eventually led to
"Trail of Tears, and Trail of Death", in Georgia and Indiana to West of the
Mississippi. (Whipperwill Publications)
