Kimberly!! Can't believe I came across your thread here. (Just browsing very early in the morning.) My great-great-grandfather was Empson Wright of Randolph County (born in Guilford County, N.C., allegedly 1797) !! I'm not sure when they moved from Va. to OH. and then Ind. -- I saw a history of Clinton County, OH, that indicates it was as early as 1812 (he may have been there already when another group of Wrights came).

My maiden name is Wright. My father is Kenneth Richard Wright, born 14 April 1913 in Hastings, NE. (yes, he's still alive and kicking at 92!!). His father was Charles L. Wright of Hastings, who was born in Randolph County (one of 7 children reportedly). His father was Jonathan R. Wright, apparently I see a brother of your Thomas!! And Jonathan's father was Empson.

How I got started down the path with the Wrights (I had very little information on them; there was much more on my mother's side) was that I found my grandfather's Bible "hiding" in my attic (my father must've given it to me when Grandpa died in the 1970s). Inside on the family records page was pasted a typewritten sheet with the following names:

Thomas Wright
Anna Brown?

Emerson (pretty sure it's Empson, and so other more knowledgeable people have said) Wright Nov. 15 1787 (1797)
Rachel Ruble Feb. 5, 1801

1. Delilah Dec. 3, 1822

2. Susannah Feb. 1811

3. Eli March 3, 1825

4. Rachel Aug. 16, 1828

5. Thomas Feb. 17, 1828

6. Sarah 1829

7. Emily Ann 1842

8. Harrison 1834

9. Jonathan R 1838-1927
Sidna Moore 1848-1934

I have more information but the links prior to Empson are a little murky for me as yet. I know mainly that Empson married a Quaker, Rachel Ruble, at Bush River Monthly Meeting. His family line down to there may have been Quaker and there's indication some forebears came from England (Lancashire originally, then Liverpool) with William Penn to the Philadelphia area. But I'm having problems, because there are Wrights in Burlington County, N.J., and in Chester County, Pa. (in the same area). And I haven't been able to make the tie between one or the other and our Wrights.

Wow, this is great. Just recently I've started focusing on Randolph County and Clinton County, OH. According to my dad, Jonathan Wright, his grandfather, snuck over the line back to Ohio from Indiana and signed up on the Union side as a sharpshooter. And even though I only had nine children listed here, I had heard from other reliable sources that Thomas -- and Jonathan -- indeed were among 11 children of Rachel and Empson.

Cheers
Wendy (Wright) Contos
