FYI you can order records through NARA online. I have a link to NARA's
Online Ordering page at the bottom of the Randolph County Military page on
the website.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inrandol/Military/index.htm
I have ordered several files from NARA, I always order the Pension Files not
the one with the Military Battle or service records. The pension file
usually gives detailed information of when they were active and where they
came down sick or wounded, so you can trace some of their service record.
I pay for the full file and so far each time I have received a large packet
back. Two files were almost a ream of paper thick, and well worth the money.
NARA has a few different tiers of pricing and what each one includes.
The Pension Files usually include proof of marriages, births and deaths. A
few have listed where the soldier was buried and the cause of death. The one
I ordered for Edward Adams had affidavits from the midwives who delivered
his children, marriage certificates from both of his marriages. Affidavits
from his Doctors and fellow service men, friends and family testifying about
how they knew him and if they were aware of any medical problems. It even
listed the patent drugs and treatments he was using and verification from
local druggists.
I am certain now the "episodes" or "spells" that were reported by Edward
were what we call today Complex Migraines. New research shows that Complex
Migraines are genetic and hereditary. His symptoms are identical to what me
and my sons experience when we have a Migraine.
I thought it was really neat to be able to trace it back through my dad's
line. (My dad also suffered from Migraines).
The file for Alfred Clevenger even had a letter from the State Hospital for
the Insane in Indianapolis stating when his widow died and where she was
buried.
Just thought I would share this, for those who have never ordered military
records.
If you have access to Ancestry's Pension File Index you may want to check
and see if your soldier or his family filed for a pension. Send NARA the
info from the card when ordering.
If you don't have access and want me to do a look up let me know.
To order the Military Records you need to give them as much info as you can
about the soldier, Regiment, State, and other variations of the name, etc.
