My gg grandmother's obit states that she was a WELLMAN before she married
(i.e. her father was named WELLMAN). This was Caroline Jane Wellman Hyatt.
My aunt made some genealogical notes in which she stated that my
great-grandmother's (Sally Hyatt) grandfather was a BURTON (since her father
was a Hyatt (and therefore her paternal grandfather was a Hyatt) this had to
refer to her maternal grandfather who, according to her mother's obit, had
to be a WELMAN).
While doing some searching one day I came across 2 Kentucky marriage records
of interest:
Northern Kentucky Marriages, 1795-1850
WELMAN, James & LEVY, Nancy, 03 Feb 1803, Kentucky, Harrison County
AND
Marriages of Campbell, Boone and Kenton Counties, Kentucky, 1795-1850
BURTON, Allen & Nancy WELMON, 19 Apr. 1814, m by RS, b(ondsmen?) Joseph
Smith & Abraham LEVI (relative of Nancy?), Campbell Co., KY
These clues make me think that MAYBE the scenario was: Nancy Levy married
James Wellman, they had a daughter named Caroline Jane Wellman, then James
Wellman died and Nancy Levy Wellman, his widow, married Allen Burton.
In 1830 the Allen Burton family was in Switzerland Co., IN.
In 1840 the Burtons were in Delaware Twp., Ripley Co., IN.
In 1850 the Burtons were in Delaware Twp., Ripley Co., IN and living next
door were Benjamin and Caroline Jane (Wellman) Hyatt and children.
