John Bitner, P. O. Rushville; Farmer, Sec. 33; son of Hiram Bitner (born in Tennessee November 3, 1804) and Lydia Low (born in Tennessee December 16, 1805); was born in Fayette County, Ind., July 3, 1829. Married October 30, 1848, Judah Windsor, daughter of Amos and Mary (McDaniels) Windsor, natives of North Carolina, born respectively November 21, 1801, and September 9, 1805. Mrs. Bitner is the eldest of a family of seven children, five living; she was born in Grayson County, Va., August 6, 1827; her parents moved to Rush County in 1837; her father died in Michigan November 26, 1873; her mother in Allen County, Ind., August 17, 1855; all the family were members of the Christian Church. Mr. Windsor was a life-long Democrat. Mr. and Mrs. Bitner have had thirteen children--Amos J., born August 28, 1849, died December 17, 1849; Amanda, April 27, 1851, died April 17, 1863; Stephen, September 14, 1853, died May 30, 1862; Hiram, April 8, 1865, died April 20, 1863; Albert, Dece!
mber 5, 1857, died April 11, 1863; Henry, January 31, 1860, died April 16, 1863; Genias, November 2, 1861, died April 8, 1863; John J., July 12, 1864; Laura I. August 1, 1866; Ada and Ida (twins), November 26, 1868; Ira L., July 8, 1871; Lura J., January 19, 1874, died July 14, 1875. Mr. Bitner is the third in a family of sixteen children, six living; began life poor, his first assessment being the small sum of $60; he now owns 186 acres of land well improved, all of which is the result of hard work, energy and a determination to succeed, assisted by his industrious and faithful wife. In politics is a Democrat, believing that grand old party is the one for the people. Mrs. Bitner is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. B. has made a home from the green woods, and can point with pride to his success.
