If you are not from the area and find your ancestor buried at aSt. Joseph
Cemetery in Vanderburgh Co, IN, you need to be aware that there are TWO St.
Joseph Cemeteries. The big one in Evansville (on Mesker Park drive near
where the old amusement park used to be and close to the zoo--I know, I am
dating myself) and the smaller one in the county north of Evansville at St.
Joseph, IN. St. Joseph, IN, was west of Darmstadt and was where many of
the Catholics attended church who lived in that area (like my g grandfather
Zuber) north of Evansville. There was a church at Darmstadt but it may
have been Lutheran (not for sure on that one). And (I found this out this
summer) many Catholics were buried at the old cemetery on Garvin and
Virginia (where St. Joseph Church is today) prior to the opening of
Evansville's St. Joe. The graves in that old cemetery were disinterred and
moved to the new St. Joe (on Mesker Park Drive) about 1872 or so. Non
Catholics at the time were buried in other locales like Locust Hill or Oak
Hill. Where your relatives were buried will tell you what religion they
were, if you don't already know. At that time, I am sure there were some
Catholics buried in public cemeteries but they were very, very few. Have a
nice day and stay cool. Helen Zuber Keusch
