There was an Arley Carpenter in the Rose Orphan Home. The following is transcribed from the book, "History of the Children" maintained by the Rose Orphan Home on each of their residents:

Arley V.S. Carpenter, age 11, date of admission to the home August 5, 1889. An illegitimate son of Virgil Steffy and Sarah Ellen Carpenter, born near Vincennes in July 1878. Parents Americans of Baptist persuasion. The father is a laborer and is living in Illinois. The mother died two years ago last Oct. His half brother, Jno Carpenter, has cared for him.
In October 1890, Arley absconded without any known cause except a love for adventures. He is supposed to have gone to his brother at Tecumseh Ferry. He was a pretty good boy, as far as his conduct was concerned, but was a little tricky, was inclined to romance a good deal and was always dreaming of adventures, such as he had read about.
2/21/47, Miss Daisie Valentine of the DPW called. Says Arley is living in Dresser (Taylorville) across the river. He says he is
one-fourth Indian and has been traveling with a Wild West Show. He is living in two wagons drawn by horses. Has sold one of his horses. He sleeps in one wagon and cooks in the other. Has been married twice. First wife died. Left the second. Is applying for old age pension. Speaks highly of the home.

Thanks for the information. When he lived there, did he live alone? Did he
have a wife, kids? Or living with his parents??? I have found out his real
name---it was Arley Carpenter.
