Fonda D. (Chapman) Lawhead
Fonda D. (Chapman) Lawhead, 88, of Evansville, Ind., passed away
Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Little Sisters of the Poor. Fonda maintained
a lifetime interest in history and genealogy. She documented her own
family's history back to the 1600's and joined the Daughters of the
American Revolution based on her research. Until her death, she
corresponded with other genealogists and academics from around the
country, many of whom visited her in Evansville to compare notes on
their research. Fonda and her husband also helped preserve a bit of
Evansville's past when they purchased and renovated an 1800's
Victorian home on Evansville's historic First Street.
While history was of interest, Fonda's special joy was children. From
1990 to 1998, she served as a Foster Grandmother at the Evansville
Psychiatric Children's Center, where her specialty was helping the
children learn to work and play on the Center's computers. She also
enjoyed crocheting afghans and playing the piano for friends and family.
Fonda is survived by a daughter, Donna J. Peak of Evansville; a son
and his wife, Joseph R. and Sue Lawhead II of Newburgh, Ind.; a
brother, Ralph M. Chapman of Evansville; grandchildren, Joseph R.
Lawhead III and Alison Lawhead Mansour of Columbus, Ohio, Emily A.
Peak of Evansville, Ind., and Amy J. London of Indianapolis, Ind.; and
great-grandchildren, Hunter Ralston Lawhead and Sierra Michala Lawhead
of Columbus, Ohio.
Fonda was preceded in death by her husband, Ralston Lawhead; her
granddaughter, Mary Beth Peak Smith, in 1988; and her son-in-law,
Bernard Peak Jr., in 1981.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, at
Little Sisters of the Poor, 1236 Lincoln Ave., with Fr. Ted Tempel
officiating. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum.
There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Little
Sisters of the Poor.
Arrangements will be handled by Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue.

but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she
will become strong
