You could try Daughters of Civil War Veterans. Phone them in Springfield, IL (You can get the number from the directory assistance operator.) Leave a message and they will call you back within a month or so. Volunteers come from a distance to work there.
Also, ancestry.com - start at the beginning by typing in the persons's name and it will show not only censuses but also Civil War records, and then it will give you instructions of how to order the military and pension records from the National Archives. You could send the request in to National Archives, even if you don't have the exact person on the ancestry.com listing.
I am looking for info on Daniel Kuhns, Harrison Guard, Wells County, Indiana Regiment, and hope I will receive something from the National Archives.
