Hi everyone:
My 4 x great grandfather was John CONN, who was reportedly from Mount
Ida, Waterford. I have found on the IGI a christening of a John CONN,
John CONN M C 5 Dec 1739 Kill St. Nicholas, Waterford, Ireland
along with his brother Joseph. Two sisters (presumably) Mary and
Susannah chr. 7 Oct 1736 at the same church. They may have been twins,
or just christened in batches.
Parents, William CONN and Mary.
However, Mount Ida is in the Ida barony just north of Waterford and in
Kilkenny county. Kill St. Nicholas is SE of Waterford. Would someone
living in Mount Ida have been christened at Kill St. Nicholas?
There may be historical records of this family as John was the father of
John CONN, chr. 5 Aug 1764 at Stoke Damerel, Devon, who became Commander
of HMS Dreadnought in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. He is listed in
"The Trafalgar Roll." After that battle, his only son Henry CONN also
joined the Dreadnought crew. John married Margaret NELSON in 1792 at
Stoke Damerel, the latter being a daughter of the Rev. Isaac Nelson, a
priest in Northumberland. However he apparently has no familial
connection to Horatio NELSON, despite the claim made for him in The
Trafalgar Roll.
Questions:
A. Is the John CONN chr. 1739 the "member of the CONN family of Mount
Ida, Waterford." referred to in "The Trafalgar Roll: The Ships and The
Officers" by Col. Robert Holden MacKenzie?
B. Can SKS provide any more information re parents William CONN and
Mary if so?
C. When were William and Mary married, and where. No record on IGI.
