Good for you!

Shannon is small compared to major U.S. airports. Once you arrive, you go through Irish Customs (there are two choices - declare something or nothing to declare. We had nothing to declare going in). We didn't sleep well on our overnight flight from Newark. Two older Irish ladies who sat behind my daughter and I chatted all night long! They ignored our glances and I didn't want to be mean. so we probably looked pretty awful~!.

The rental car agencies have counters inside. I had pre-arranged the rental through my travel agency, so they verified the reservation at the inside counter (Hertz) and then directed me to a shuttle out front to go over to their lot and outbuilding where I actually reviewed the vehicle selection, signed the contract and picked up the car. Very easy.

Upon return, we just pulled into the lot and took the shuttle back (we had a dour shuttle driver on the return but a very pleasant gentleman coming in).

I have to tell you it will be difficult to do any serious research without the parish or townland. Do you have a death certificate or any papers with a native parish?

Write me personally with as much info as you have and I will see if I can assist you or direct you to a better source of info. I am no expert, having just started researching outside the U.S. myself.

Kathleen thanks for posting about your trip. My husband and I are leaving
May 25th from Boston to Shannon. What can you tell me about the Shannon
Airport? We have arranged for a car from Thrifty rental. We will be staying in
Cannaroe (sp?) in County Galway. I believe it is a little northwest of Galway
City. We are fortunate to be going with a friend and his family who is from
there and we will be staying at his brother's house. (Great for saving on
hotels!) We are very excited. This is a dream trip for me.

I am hoping to track down something on my DEMPSEY family while in Ireland. I
found a reference in a travel guide that the DEMPSEY family name was popular
along the borders of County Offlay and Laios (pronounced Leash). I plan to
drive there at least one day (if I can find anything while still in
Massachusetts to lead me there) and hopefully find something to help me in my research.

My third great grandfather was Andrew DEMPSEY b. abt. 1833. (Some records in
Massachusetts list his name as Andrew and others as Anthony.) Andrew married
Hannah -?- I estimate their marriage to have been in the early 1850's.
They had 7 children all born in MA, the first being born in 1856. To date, I
have not found the name on a ship passenger list.

I would sincerely appreciate any guidance from those who are experienced with
researching in Ireland. This is my first step in researching there.

Sincerely,

Cindy
