Hi Jim,
Page 268
Shannon In addition to O Seannachain (see
Shanahan) Shannon can be O Seanain (see Shinane)
and Mac Giolla t-Seanain (see Giltenan). Shannon
is fairly numerous in all four provinces. See Also
Sheenan.
Page 268
(O) Shanahan O Seanachain. (The basic word is
sean, old). A numerous Dalcassian sept whose name
is sometimes contracted to Shannon; now widespread
throughout Munster. Map Clare.
Page 271
(O) Shinane O Sionain. A west Clare name now
widely changed to Shannon and spelt O Seanain in
Irish.
Page 270
(O) Sheenan O Sionain. Woulfe considers this to be
a variant of O Seanain. See Shinane. It is ,
however, the name of a Co. Tyrone sept to be
differentiated from the southern, Synan. It has to
some extent been absorbed by Shannon in Co.
Monaghan.
Page 126
(Mac) Giltenan Mac Giolla tSeanain. A variant of
Gilsenan used in Co. Clare, where it is also
anglicized Shannon.
Page 126
(Mac) Gils(h)henna Mac Giolla Seanain (devotee of
St. Senan). This sept originated in Tyrone, but
the name is now equally well known in north
Leinster. Both Leonard and Nugent have been
adopted as synonyms of Gilshenan, which is
sometimes made Shannon in Co. Fermanagh.
I think that was the most variants of a name I
have yet done.

Hello Sharon,
I saw your email about the book "Surnames of
Ireland".
Could you look up Shannon and tell me where in
Ireland they might originate
from? Thanks.
Jim
