On the evening of June 6th, as Mr. Wm. CAHILL, of Mountcollins, near
Abbeyfeale, was returning from Newcastle, he was fired at by a party of
men from beside a fence, and seriously wounded. It appears that CAHILL,
who is a farmer and landlord, in a small way, proceeded to NewCastle
West on that morning for the purpose of obtaining a decree for
possession against one of his tenants. A settlement was attempted, but
failed. CAHILL, whose hat was completely riddled with shot, had a most
miraculous escape, while his driver escaped unhurt. A man names David
SHEEHAN, one of CAHILL's tenants, was arrested on suspicion, and
remanded for eight days. CAHILL some time ago was under police
protection. The attacking parties fired two shots, both of which took
effect, the horse walking at the time in consequence of a steep incline.

The Limerick Sub-Land Commissioners, Messrs. D. ENCKEY, B.L., chairman;
C. O'KEEFFE, and A.N. COMYN, recently delivered judgment in seventeen
cases in Limerick. There were fifteen applications for the fixing of
fair rents from the union of Tipperary, and one each from the unions of
Limerick and Tulla. Reductions averaging 27 per cent, were granted, and
in some cases nearly 50 per cent, reduction wa given.

The case of Mr. John MOLONEY, of Knocklong, illustrates the extent of
the facilities which exist for having rents equitably fixed in the Land
Courts. Mr. MOLONEY cannot, it seems, get his rent fixed at all, and
thousands are similarly situated. There is a difference in this case of
£128 between the valuation and the rent. Yet, with this fact staring us
in the face, the "Tablet" would probably inform us that in view of the
Papal rescript, we have no right to dispute that every Irish tenant can
have his rent equitably fixed if he wants to.

William Nicholas HANNAN, late of Cahirella Castle, Grange, in the county
of Limerick, farmer, has been declared bankrupt.

On June 5th, Mr. Thomas NAUGHTON, PLG of Ballycasey, near Croom, while
passing through one of his fields, was suddenly attacked by a bull, his
property, which gored him to death before assistance could be procured.

Doctor William L. MYLES, son of Alderman Z. MYLES, of Limerick, has been
appointed Resident Medical Superintendent of Kilkenny Lunatic Asylum,
vacant by the death of the late Dr. Barry DELANY. Dr. MYLES had been 13
years medical assistant in the Richmon Lunatic Asylum, Dublin.
