LIMERICK.
The Limerick Grand Jury, on July 12, unanimously refused to sanction the
proposed light railway, connecting Charleville, in the county of Cork,
with Broadford and Newcastle, in the county of Limerick. The reasons
which influenced the Grand Jury in disapproving of the railroad were,
that it would not be of sufficient value to justify and guarantee, and
that the great majority of the occupiers of land, within the taxable
area, are opposed to the line, and are unwilling to incur the liability
of the guarantee. The Cork Grand Jury, at last Assizes, approved of the
portion of the project affecting the county Cork, but suspended action
regarding the guarantee, pending the decision of the Limerick Grand Jury.
A serious faction fight is reported from Cappamore, the combatants
belonging to what are called the Three and Four-year-old parties. The
wife of one of the belligerents, named WHELAN, who interfered, received
a terrific blow of a stone in the head, which was fractured, her life
being placed in imminent danger.
Brother JEROME, O.S.F., and his companion, Brother AMBROSE, have arrived
in Limerick, from Brooklyn, New York, with the view of getting subjects
for their order in America.
Mathew DUHIG, of Bruff, in he county of Limerick, grocer and baker, has
been adjudged a bankrupt.
Mr. J.G. BIGGAR, M.P., arrived in Limerick, on July 18, by the mid-day
mail, and proceeded to Ennis in the evening. The hon. gentleman is
taking his vacation.
On July 14, Mr. M. LENIHAN, J.P., Mayor of Limerick, with other members
of his Corporation, arrived in London, to protest, before the Chief
Secretary, against the payment of the odious extra-police tax, placed on
the citizens by Clifford LLOYD, who seems to have failed abroad as well
as at home. Mr. PARNELL gave the deputation a banquet in the House of
Commons, at which several popular members of Parliament were present.
On July 8, at the Convent of Perpetual Adoration, St. Scholasticus
Abbey, Teignmouth, Devonshire, and interesting ceremony of reception
took place, the young lady being Miss Mary Frances CREAGH, in religion
Sister Mary Walburga, daughter of John CREAGH, Esq., 1 Osmington
terrace, Limerick, and sister of the Rev. Thomas CREAGH, C.S.S.R., St.
Joseph's, Teignmouth.
