Ted, I just checked on Genealogy.com to see how long it would take just
to do NY state. They have the censuses indexed for 1900 and 1910.
First of all, you would have to go state by state. The 1900 results
don't show age so you would have to check each page. However, 1910
results are a bit easier. I found a Eugene McCarthy aged 51 living in
Yonkers with sister Catherine, both emigrated to US in 1867. This
evidently is not yours, but might be, since I don't know the complete
family history.

What I am trying to show is that even if someone had the time to do all
the lookups required, we still couldn't say for sure that what we found
was definitely yours, only you can do that.

Genealogy.com costs $20 per month for complete access to the censuses.
They have every year, except 1850, 1880 and 1920, and most are
indexed. Every week they seem to add another census or another index.
I have been on for two months and in the time they added the 1910 index
and the 1930 census. For a job like you need, Ted, I suggest you try a
month's subscription. If you are retired, like I am, you might have the
time to check all the states out for 1900 and 1910. However, I
recommend you start with 1910, the results will give you age, place of
birth and allow you to discount many and you will not have to go to the
actual census page.
