Liz,
I don't have the book handy or the author but I will get it but I was
absolutely shocked at what I read about Irish history. It seems for 800
years the Irish have been the whipping boys for the British. Even to the
extent of shoving starving Scots into Northern Ireland and calling them
Irish. Then the British had problems trying to get the Catholics to yield
and they brought their Protestant ways with them. Well the British
government supported Northern Ireland Scottish and Irish Protestants by
running the Catholics out of their homes, jobs and giving preference to the
Northern Irish. So they got the better jobs, the higher educations, the
nicer homes, the better government jobs and then the British have the gall
to ask what is the problem with you Southern Irish Catholics. There are
many Protestant and Catholics who get along very well and the country would
be better served if the British government would just get out which they
said they would do, but they still had a shadow government and in the recent
political stirrings the British have said "We may have to get involved
again". So you have your IRA who try to fight against this aggression, but
they are not selective about who they kill when the time comes and they get
bad press. So the way I understand it is a problem on many levels.
