From the book, Irish First Names by Ronan Coghlan:

ABIGAIL (Abaigeal) (f) 'father rejoiced'. A name
which, in Ireland was used to anglicise the native
name, Gobinet.

GOBINET (Gobnait) (f) Derivative of gob 'mouth',
'beak', 'bill'. St Gobinet, a saint associated with
Ballyvourney, was said to have been born in Clare.
The name was anglicised as Abigail, with which it was
at times used interchangeably. Gobnat, Gobnet and
Gubnet are variants.
