Hi Jean....I had two brother and two sisters in the late '20's and early
'30's. My mother came from Glasgow and married at 17. My father was 25. He grew up
on a farm. His father was the son of Irish immigrant parents. My ggrandfather
died from wounds from the Civi War and his widow could not keep all her
children. Her sons (one my grandfather) were state wards and sent to live on a farm
in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, Goshen. My father and his parents
moved to Salem about 1917. It was very hard during the Great Depression and it
took a heavy toll on my parents. They provided as best they could with no
skills. It was WPA that saved us. My parents were full of love for their children
and it must have been very painful for them but they always kept their heads
high. Things improved later and all five of us received a college education in
time. There were detours (military) along the way. My wife used to ask me if I
ever wanted to buy the house I lived in when I was a kid and I told her Yes,
all of them.
Thank you for your interest but I know we weren't alone and what we
experienced was nothing compared to our Irish and Scots ancestors.
