Patricia, I believe steerage passengers were listed on the manifest also. The majority of immigrants came steerage. Irene

RE: John McDermott
I subscribe to Ancestry, and have checked through 100 records. Is the date you give his date of departure or arrival? There are many John McDermotts in Ancestry's Ships/Arrivals, and the dates are for every year, but 1854. Well, there is one entry, but that is for a boy of 5-10 years old.

The other thing is that he may have been part of the "steerage" on a ship. I'm not quite sure what that means, but I think these folks were not individually written on a manifest, being listed as "steerage, (# of people)".

Good Luck with the search.
Patricia
