Mary--remember that the question asked on the census is Place of Birth, Father's Place of Birth, Mother's Place of Birth. And, they didn't suddenly answer in that fashion. I have never checked this out, but the listings are quite consistent, so I can only presume that they were asked which part of Ireland if they said Ireland only. Check a few Irish names in that same census, and you will see the same. Check my Nearys in Maryland, for example (Try Winifred Neary). Father was born in the Irish Free Statek, and the Mother in Norhtern Ireland --both came here in 1852 Prior to 1922, the answer would have simply been Ireland (check previous census for your lot). After 1922, the distinction was made between Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland or Eire). It is possible that while your people lived in tipperary--a long way from those six counties--they had family lands in Ulster, and were actually born there. Just rechecking your message, I
would not discount checking for Stoney relations in those 6 counties.

PS I thought some of the responses you got were quite annoying.

Kathleen,
Thanks for the intriguing information. It creates more mystery. But, I
didn't mention that my Stoney line came into America in the 1860's. I went
back and looked and I exaggerated how many times I found the Northern
Ireland piece. I only see that my ggggrandfather and his son started listing
it that way in the 1930s. So, that would certainly fit with when you said
the counties separated. The mystery is that I have only found the Stoney's
mostly listed in the Co. Tipp area and the names of those Stoney's are
interwoven again and again in my line. I just have not been able to find
documentation of connection even though my father years ago said we were
related to a George Johnstone Stoney (note my ggggrandfather has the same
name!)and he is listed living Co Tipperary area. So, I wonder why my family
would have specified Northern Ireland suddenly in the 1930's even when they
had been living in America for over 60 years. I just am really skeptical
that they originated from one of the counties mentioned for Northern
Ireland. Of course, Stoney is certainly an English rather than an Irish name
and the rest of the story is that The start of the Stoney line was George
Stoney of Kettlewell in York Co. England who had a son Thomas of Greyfort
who moved to Co. Tipperary after the revolution in 1688. George and Thomas
are well documented along with many of their descendents in many Irish
documents. This is where I am having trouble finding documentation to prove
our link with this family. It certainly gives me more food for thought, so
thanks again!
Mary

Mary==Northern Ireland is comprised of the 6 counties of Ireland which
remained in union with Great Britain after the Irsh War of Independence.
The 6 counties--Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Tyrone, and Fermanagh--were
separated from the other 26 in the early 1920's. Hence, you will see in the
1930 census the terms Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State as places of
birth
