Hi Jerry,
Small tweak to your excellent post !
I'd say that Oileán Rí ( Island of the King ) would be the correct spelling
rather than Righe !
The "an" is rarely used (go dtí Oileáin Ri rather than go dtí an Oileán Rí
or alternatively Oiláin an Rí)in place names.
As I mentioned, Oileán is more commonly used in Cork Kerry rather than the
West Coast where the irish word "Inis" for Island ( English versions - Inch
Inish etc. )is more commonly used.
Kind regards,
Stuart

Illaunrie might be Oileán Righe
('island of a king') but I doubt it because it's missing the word 'the' (an)
which it would normally have. Le gach dea-ghuí / Best, - Jerry

Subject: Re: [IRISH-AMER] - Galway Query (Illaunrie?) -- also "Illyria
--IRISH IN VARIOUS WARS
Kat -- Re the "Illyria" reference on your Galway grandfather's census
record - Check out the Leitrim-Roscommon website all-Ireland townland search
engine. There are many townlands in Galway that begin with Ill. Set the
search for "begins with" Ill. Nothing exact, but some such as Illeny,
Illananirey, Illaunrie, Illaunroe, Illaunane, Illion, Illaunrush, Illaunkyle
- many more. I was surprised to see so many townlands beginning with Ill,
so you may be on to something ...
Does any of the below apply to your grandfather's situation? I believe the
reference to illyria in the web address may be used in the context of
"renowned for military prowess," a nod to the peoples of the ancient Roman
province of Illyricum and a reference in Shakespeare. Jean
