Hi Ed - Do you have newspaper death notices for your couple? Your
reference librarian can send away for microfilmed copies of newspapers for
the two days following a known date of death. Reference librarian has
sources that give names of newspapers in particular locations in particular
time frames, where to send away for the microfilms for you to look at
locally via the free interlibrary loan program. Death certificates?
Genealogy libraries and branches of the National Archives (USA) and the LDS
(Mormon) FHL have microfilmed state death indices that are divided into
approximate 10-year increments; these are alphabetized and soundexed; they
give name, age at time of death, location at time of death, spouse, etc.
Best of all, they give the number of the death certificate so you can order
same from a vital records office or, if very old, a state or county archival
library.
Have you sent for the Social Security applications for husband and wife, as
you have their death dates? Many of these applications date back to circa
1936, contain full name, date of birth, where born, address at the time of
application, where employed and address of same, whether married and name of
spouse. Also they contain copies of applicants' signatures, which I find
especially nice. Likely will provide new info. for you to work with. There
are several Social Security Death Indexes on line, one by Rootsweb. They
have gone up in price, but still a bargain for all the new information you
may acquire.
Have you checked serial city directory listings? If you look at these
directories for every year that a family lived in the city, you learn when
the children in a family got old enough to have a job. This may give you a
hint of about when they were born. You need to look at every year to do a
thorough job. For example, a working woman may not have been listed for a
year or two after she had a child, but then her name may reappear when she
returned to the ranks of the employed. Sometimes a child will only be
listed for one year before leaving the family. Sometimes a child will move
back in with the parents when they found that it was difficult to make it on
their own. Or, an uncle may appear for a brief time. You will sometimes
miss something important unless you examine every year. City directories can
be used in conjunction with censuses. If you consult the directory first to
get an address, it will save you time when looking for a person in a city
census. Abbreviations: many are explained at the beginning of the listings.
However, some are not. h = house or residence (used for the head of
household.) I am not sure if this includes renting an apartment.) do =
ditto, not domicile.
Not familiar with Catholicism, but wondering if you could find reference to
family events in their local Catholic newspaper or parish newsletter,
journal or website for St. Catherine of Siena Church in Manhattan. (Named
for St. Catherine of Siena (Sienna), the 14th-century Italian saint who,
among other things, nursed plague and cancer victims.) Perhaps their names
are recorded in literature from a church organization - Holy Names Society
or Altar Rosary Society. I saw an interesting "Time" magazine website
archived article from the 1950s about an energetic and long-time serving,
retiring priest of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Manhattan.
Consider requesting help from the county historical societies in the KNOWN
places they lived, worked, raised a family, died. No doubt they can come up
with documents on the family, perhaps even a will. I have done this with
very good results. If you have a known address for them, or for a school
their children may have attended, try "googling it, see what comes up.
You can be pretty sure that you have the right church for the marriage, as
even an elderly woman would not likely forget that important detail. The
date might have been slightly off. Perhaps surname/s were with slightly
different spelling/s than you had requested and so was missed. You can find
more on your surnames and the many variations at www.ireland.com/ancestor/
