I posted the following tips on a message board in response to a request and
it was suggested that I post them to mailing lists, too, so here goes.
Additions more than welcome (and apologies to those who will get this several
times)!

Good Irish Genealogy Web Sites and Books
Failteromhat.com has lots of useful information, including Griffith's
index. Quick way to determine where names were most common in mid-19th century.
Askaboutireland.ie has Griffith's pages and maps.
Irish-roots.ie lets you search civil and church records indexes, more being
added regularly. Have to pay to see actual entries, so I use to narrow
possibilities, then get entries from LDS or GRO (don't trust transcriptions on
line, as can have errors).
Irishtimes.com/ancestor has lots of great information. I use it mostly for
finding what records exist for various Catholic parishes. If LDS haven't
filmed, National Library of Ireland often has and you can pay a researcher to
search. County heritage centers are another, but expensive, avenue, but I've
had very mixed results.
Groireland.ie is for ordering civil records that haven't been filmed by the
LDS.
Nationalarchives.ie gradually putting 1911 Irish census on line. Both 1911
and 1901 should be on line by end of 2009.
Leitrim-roscommon.com has lots of information for more than just Leitrim
and Roscommon.
Familysearch.org good for searching IGI (under Advanced Search) and Record
Search pilot (all civil indexes are supposed to be on there, but I've found
not complete), as well as library catalog.
If you have any Clare ancestors, clarelibrary.ie is wonderful.
Grenham's Tracing Your Irish Ancestors very useful for getting the lay of
the Irish genealogy land.
Mitchell's New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland helpful for converting civil
parishes in Griffith's to RC parishes, as well as for figuring out civil
registration districts.
