The Arcadia Publishing books can be a great resource. I have a few of
them for the areas around Philadelphia where my ancestors lived. The
ones I have for Abington and Cheltenham were actually authored by the
Old York Road Historical Society and dip heavily into their archives.
Besides a good overview, it does give you a taste for what they have in
their collection and an indication of what else you might find there.
In addition, their books are not limited to just areas/neighborhoods. I
managed to find a publication of theirs that was written by a historian
about "The Seeing Eye" which was the first place that trained guide dogs
here in the US. I have a relative that was in one of their earliest
classes after they moved from Nashville to Morristown, NJ. She obtained
a number of "Seeing Eyes" in her lifetime. Very neat history.
