Hi Mary Ann,

I'm running out the door, so don't have time to look up the film
numbers, but, yes, the LDS has the Phila. BMD indexes on microfilm.
What you describe is the register (step two) and it does include both
doctors and midwives. Step 3 is the official Returns supplied by the
doctor / midwife -- which the LDS also have on film, I believe. I
must admit, though, I just go in person to the City Archives, so I
don't know what the LDS has (but I do know that most of the film at
the City Archives was made by the LDS and a copy donated to the
archive, so I know most of the fiimed material is in the LDS catalog,
somewhere.

You can hire a professional to do the work for you, or you can pay
the City Archives to do it. And, yes, you can do it yourself in
person at the archives. Beware, the index is not a pure-alphabetical
index -- it's by year, then initial of last name, then initial of
first name, then chronological as reported, so you have to skim a lot
of entries in the handwritten ledger (the index). There is not a
computerized index, if that's what you're asking.

If you want to hire a pro, you might want to take a look at the pros
listed on the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania website,
www.genpa.org, under Resources (I think). Here's the direct link --
http://www.genpa.org/profgen.html

Hope that helps.

Claire
