Subject: [IRISH IN ST. LOUIS] Irish on the river
Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 14:38:46 EST
Hello
Patrick Thomas Gibbons and his wife, Bridgit Flaherty Manning Gibbons,
had a son, William A. Gibbons, in St. Louis on 9/30/1872 or 1877. The
archives could not find a record of William's birth. So I am going to look
for Catholic church records.
Can anyone tell me what neighborhood a poor Irish family would have lived in
during the 1870s ? I think that Thomas, who would have been about 23 in
1872, would have worked on the river as a laborer. The family moved between
Louisville and Cincinnati so the neighborhood would be close to the place in
the river where boats docked that went also to those ports. Which Catholic
church would have served this eighborhood ? This Thomas and his wife were on
the 1870 and 1880 census for Louisville.
Also, in St. Louis, I found a Thomas Gibbons who might be the
grandfather of the above mentioned Thomas. He was born abt 1808 and arrived
in Louisville abt 1849 and was on the Louisville census for 1850 and then
vanished. I found a timely Thomas or Patrick Gibbons on the St. Louis census
for 1870 along with his wife, Bridgit.
If anyone has any city directories for St. Louis for the 1870s, I
would appreciate a lookup of all the Gibbons and Flahertys. Thanks for all
replies.
Sue
