Have you obtained their death certificates? You didn't say where Samuel
was a ferry boat operator...if NYC they have a death records for that
time period. If you need info on how to get a death cert from NY, this
website might be of help:

Death records in Kansas are available from 1911 on...if she died before
that you might try newspaper obituary, you never know what is mentioned.
