I am new to mailing list and have some info & some questions. I am very
impressed with tips from Connors genealogy.
A fellow genealogist sent me an article entitled The Irish in Hammersmith &
Fulham in 1851. written by Jerome Farrell, a former archivist in the
Hammersmith/Fulham area of England a suburb of London. The author uses the
1851 census as his main source. Apparently, many Irish agricultural laborers
emigrated from Ireland to England during the famine and worked as garden
laborers supplying food to the residents of London. According to the
article, most came from SW Ireland more than ½ from Cork , followed by
Limerick. Others worked as servants living conditions were very bad.
My grandfather John Ryan was born in Fulham, England in 1864. I have census
records for the family in 1861 &1871 in Fulham. Johns parents are listed as
Michel Ryan (from Tipperary) and Johanna Sullivan (from Cork). They were
agricultural workers living on Peterborough Rd in Steeles Cottages. Johanna
and children emigrated to the US in June of 1872; I have not been able to
find a passenger record for Michael, but he must have emigrated earlier. I
have been unable to locate where Michael was born in Tipperary. I have paid
for searches at Tipperary North Family History Center and the Bru Boru
center in South Tipperary. Family lore also indicated my Ryans came from
Tipperary ( as did thousands of others, Im sure). A confusing development
in the 1930s US census John Ryan says his parents were born in Northern
Ireland. My Irish daughter-in-law says many Irish moved from the south to
Northern Ireland to find work, so perhaps that was the case. I have the
names of Michaels parents from a tree submitted to WFT, but my letter to
the submitter of the tree was returned. Id appreciate any ideas on
tackling this brick wall. Jean Ryan Driscoll
