Hi
I have been searching for information on my GIBBONS and KERRIGAN families. My Patrick Gibbons married Margaret Kerrigan. We were told that they were refused consent to marry due to different religions, apparently they came to England to marry. I found a marriage on freebmd which took place in Liverpool England in Nov 1867.Their 1st child John was born in Killeencoff Westport Co Mayo Jan 1868. Patrick's address is given as Killeencoff, no address for Margaret, the informant is Francis Kerrigan, occupier Killeencoff. The family came to England sometime before the birth of their 2nd child Thomas [ my grandfather] in Dec 1870. If the cert I have is their marriage I'm wondering why they would return to Ireland then come back to England again. I'm assuming the family were not wealthy so why go to the expense.
Also a distant cousin of mine has a photo of Margaret Gibbons nee Kerrigan, on the back her name is given as Margaret Fitzgibbons. Both John's birth cert and the marriage cert give their names as Gibbons, was it usual for the FITZ to be dropped?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I have very little information to go on so it's proving very difficult to learn more.
Regards
Julia
