Hi Listers,

The Catholic Protectory in the Bronx was run by The Archdiocese of New York which encompasses the New York counties of the Bronx, Dutchess, Manhattan, Orange, Putnam, Rckland, Staten Island (Richmond, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester.

Young children went to orphanages, and some older chldren went to protectories. Protectories had a heavy concentration upon trade and skills training to enable their yourng charges to be self-supporting and responsible adults. Young Catholic adolescents were often sent by the Courts to Protectories rather than to State reform schools.

I searched for "New York Catholic Protectory" and found the following:

This is a good URL (Catholic Encyclopedia) for a description of New York Catholic Protectories, including noting that the Catholic Protectory for Girls was run by the Sisters of Charity, and the Catholic Protectory for Boys was run by the Christian Brothers.

This next URL is for a list of various orphanages of 1900, all of which have the 1900 census information transcribed into nicely readable pages.

There are eight pages of transcriptions for the Girls' Protectory:

There are eight pages of transcriptions for the Boys' Protectory:

This is a wonderful source for all sorts of Catholic information, including Churches, and orphanages of various sorts.

Within the above URL, there is an entry for: "Child-Caring Homes within the Archdiocese of New York in 1927.
Source: The Official Catholic Directory: 1927, New York : P. J. Kenedy & Sons, 1927

The New York Catholic Protectory,
Office: 415 Broome Street, New York City, NY; Boys' Department, 1900 E. Temont Avenue.
Capacity: 1000.
40 Brothers of the Christian Schools.

I hope that this is helpful in your quest.
Mary Ann
