Subject: [IRISH-NYC] Funeral Records in other states

Hi -

I have called and gotten records I needed from cemeteries in several states -- Kansas City, Missouri; two cities in California. Some were over 100 years old. It seems to me that the key is finding the cemetery your ancestor is buried in, since the funeral parlor may well be out of business.

And call and get the name of a record keeper or researcher!! Then, if they tell you to write, you have someone
to follow up with. This works, even at very large cemeteries.

Of course, my problem in New York City is not soluble. It seems my g-grandfather, with the fairly common name of Patrick Callahan, died somewhere between the 1900 census and the 1920 census., so I don't know when he died. You must have a reasonable timeframe to start searching for a state death record, which nearly always has the cemetery listed on it.
