Hello Michael,

The immigrant names were put on the passenger manifests
in the port from which they left. So any changes were given
by the person themselves when they purchased their ticket,
unless there was some type of spelling error by the person
writing it down. I believe the chagne from Folan to Foley was
common in the U.S.

Looking though the immigrants from the Aran Islands
that I have extracted here are some possibilities:

Ellis Island
Stephen Folan, age 24, born abt 1878, arrived 24 Apr 1902,
contact Charles ?, friend, San Jose, CA

Michael Foley, age 21, born abt 1885, arrived 24 March 1906,
from Arran Isld, contact Peter Foley, brother, at 550 Park Ave.,
San Jose, CA

Mary Foley, age 21, born abt 1882, arrived 13 Sept. 1903,
from Arran Isld., contact Thomas Foley, brother, at 550 Park Ave.,
San Jose, CA

Boston Passenger Lists
23 Folans
8 Foleys

The only Peter Folan, born abt 1907 from Inishmaan

There is a Peter Foley, born abt 1880, arrived 19 April 1901,
contact Mary Sullivan, aunt, 12 Laurent St., Roxbury, MA,
passage paid by brother, had $6.75.

No Stephen Folan or Foley in the Boston Records from the Arran
Islands (that I have been able to find).

Do you know where the Foleys lived when they came to the US?
This could help to identify possible siblings.
