Coffin Falls From Copter Into the Sea Off Ireland

Lahinch, Ireland, April 3 -

A coffin containing the body of a resident of Boston
fell into the sea near here today while being carried
by a helicopter to a small island for burial.

The body was that of Miss Mary Foley, who died in
Boston at the age of 56, after working there for 20 years
as a governess. She had asked to be buried at her
birthplace, the island of Inishmaan.

The body arrived from Boston yesterday and was being
flown by helicopter because there was no regular boat
service to the island.

The pilot said he had been forced to drop the coffin into
Liscannor Bay after it began swinging under the fuselage,
possibly because the straps holding it had broken or
loosened.

A sea and air search failed to find the crated coffin, which
fell into about 120 feet of water.
