Hi Carloman

It would be nice to know who you are!

The LDS filmed the Indexes to the Registry of Deeds and the
Memorial Books that are located in Dublin.

I visited the Registry of Deeds in Dublin last year and found
some Memorials for various ancestors. I was told by two
professional researchers whom I met while there that the LDS
had filmed them and that they were available through their
Libraries all over the world.

This is correct, I have accessed these films at the local LDS
Library here in sunny Queensland. There 2580 films in total
so it could be an expensive and timely exercise. I decided
after looking at the surname Index in person that to search
the county Index was more fruitful and in the end less time
consuming. The books in Dublin are very large and very
heavy and some are a mile high up on shelves reached only
by ladder. Unfortunately some of the films are hard to read
so going in person would be more thorough but too far away
for most of us in foreign parts.

This is what the LDS says about the films.

AUTHOR
Ireland. Registry of Deeds.

TITLE
Transcripts of memorials of conveyances and wills, 1708-1929.

PUBLICATION INFORMATION
Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1951.

FORMAT
2580 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.

NOTES
Microfilm of original records in Dublin.

This is what I have discovered since visiting the LDS Library.

The Indexes are arranged from A - Z for the surname of the Grantor
of the Deed. The Grantee although named is not Indexed alphabetically
but appears alongside the Grantors name as well as the Book No,
Page No & Memorial Number.

Then there are Indexes to the various townlands in A - Z order for each
County. Here is given the Townland, Barony, Grantor and Grantee as well as
Book No, Page No & Memorial Number.

Then there are the films of the actual books that the memorials are
written up in. Each film contains one and sometimes two books. On
these films are the Memorials filmed directly from the books. I don't
know how many memorials are in a book but usually there are 1 - 2
per page and the books are probably three inches thick and 15" wide
and 20" long ( a lot of memorials)

There are thousands and thousands of Memorials in all. Rooms of them
at the Registry of Deeds, in Henrietta Street, Dublin.

Once you have found a memorial, you are able to take an extract from
the film or if you want to pay 10 pounds for each one you can send to the
Registry of Deeds in Dublin and order a copy of the original Deed
with the full wording and signatures and seals.

Definitely worth checking that the Memorial numbers are correct as
they are difficult to read sometimes and it is expensive to purchase an
incorrect deed.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

You can access the LDS library on the Internet or visit a LDS library
in person and find the film numbers for the Indexes and the Books.

The information is excellent if you are lucky to find memorials relating
to your family.

To date I have four. One Marriage settlement for a couple whose
marriage I have never found in a church register. It named the year
the brides name, the brides father, where they lived. How much
money was paid in settlement. The name of three pieces of land the
groom owned or leased. It named his father, his uncle or grandfather
not sure which. The size of the land parcels, what they were called
and how long they had held them in the family.

Others were about parcels of land some of which had been held since
the 1700's by whom, naming the father, uncle an son. A number of
parcels of land amounts of money etc.

Hope all this helps.

Susie
