Subject: [IRL-CARLOW] Researching Co Carlow records

When we were in Carlow last year, I picked up some info at a couple of places
that are MUSTS.

Visitors are welcome (but I don't think they do research for you on the spot.
I dropped off copies of my family group sheets, which is why I was there.)
I don't know what the research fee is now. Last year it was US$17 and that
was just for the initial research fee. I don't know what you get for that.
You fill out a form with your ancestor's name, date of birth, place of birth,
religion, parents names and mothers maiden name, date and place of marriage,
ancestors siblings, ancestors children, etc. Of course, you may not know much
about your ancestors, and that is why you are paying the heritage center! If
you give them as much info as you have, they may still be able to find your
family for you. Naturally, the more you know, the easier it may be to find
them. I suggest researching US records first, to see if there is anything
there that tells you more about the exact birthplace and names of any family
members.
There is also the library in Carlow. However, they do not do research for
you. But they do have old Carlow newspapers on microfilm, dating back to the
1700s. Don't forget to make an appointment to reserve a microfilm reader.
